Posted on August 2, 2018 | Press ReleasesBangor, ME – Following an extensive national search, the Board of Directors of Eastern Maine Development Corporation (EMDC) voted unanimously on July 26, 2018 to hire Lee Umphrey as EMDC’s next CEO.
Since 2013, Umphrey has been the CEO of Harrington Family Health Center, in Harrington, Maine. Prior to that, he was Director of Strategic Development and Communications at the IDP Foundation, Vice President at Math for America, Director of Communications and Spokesman for Governor John Baldacci, and Community and Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator for the City of Bangor. Umphrey also served as a public affairs consultant supporting Senator George Mitchell during the Northern Ireland peace talks, as Director of Community and Government Relations with Training Development Corporation, and at the start of his career as a legislative assistant for US Senator Claiborne Pell and as a research assistant in the Library of Congress.
“It was Lee’s breadth of experience that really impressed the search committee and our board,” said EMDC’s Board Chair, Micki Sumpter. “That experience, his commitment to this region, and his success in Harrington made him an ideal candidate for this role.”
Umphrey will be replacing Michael Aube, who has served as EMDC’s CEO on two different occasions, with his most recent tenure as CEO beginning in January of 2009. Sumpter shared the EMDC board’s appreciation for Aube’s leadership, saying: “Our board and this region owe Michael tremendous gratitude for the commitment he has made, over many years, to the economic health and well-being of Eastern Maine.”
“I am delighted to join EMDC’s dedicated and talented team working to boost and support economically vibrant communities, businesses, and individuals. To that end, I look forward to growing EMDC’s entrepreneurial legacy and impact by creating new opportunities with additional resources and capital that promotes innovation and resiliency while keeping our region and state economically, environmentally, and socially healthy.” Umphrey will begin work at EMDC on October 1, 2018.
