In a unique collaboration with Hampden Academy, Eastern Maine Development Corporation’s (EMDC) Youth Services staff have recently launched a Local Workforce Investment Board (LWIB)-endorsed WorkReady™ class in southern Penobscot County. Nine students, all Seniors, have enrolled in the semester-long 60 hour class. Making this particular WorkReady™ unique, participants will have an opportunity to earn both the WorkReady™ Certificate and ½ credit toward their high school diploma from the Academy. Further, as enrolled Workforce Investment Act customers, participants will have access to a full suite of employment, training, and support services designed to help ensure their successful completion of high school and subsequent transition into the adult workforce or post-secondary education. Youth Services Program Manager Nancy McKechnie and Career Advisors Seamus Higgins and Denise Smith will be team-facilitating the group and providing much of the classroom instruction.
WorkReady™ is an initiative of Maine's LWIBs and the Maine Department of Education. The 60 hour soft skills-based training is designed to provide successful participants with not only skills essential in today's workplace, but also a portable credential that is endorsed by businesses throughout the state.
People who complete the WorkReady™ Credential Program will be able to:
1. Understand how to be successful employees based on individual strengths and personal awareness.
2. Develop a plan for employment based on career interests.
3. Know how to seek and apply for a job.
4. Understand how to communicate effectively in the workplace.
5. Work effectively with co-workers and as part of a team.
6. Demonstrate basic work knowledge.
7. Demonstrate an awareness of work-related safety and its importance.
